Business casual top for women: Deborah V-neck in Pearl

Business Casual for Women: What to Wear, What to Skip, and 5 Outfits to Copy

Business casual for women means looking put together without wearing a suit: a polished top, a tailored bottom, a layer if you need it, and a shoe you can walk in. It is also one of the vaguest dress codes there is. This guide gives you the rules in plain terms, five outfits to copy for the week, what to skip, and how business casual differs from smart casual and business professional.

Shop the business casual basics: Our tops are made in the USA in a microfiber and spandex knit that holds its shape all day and never needs an iron. Sizes XS to XL.

Business casual in three rules

  1. Keep one tailored piece in every outfit. A trouser with a crease, a structured jacket or a skirt with a proper waistband. That one piece is what makes the outfit read as work.
  2. Choose smooth, solid fabrics. A knit top with a clean finish looks more polished than a busy print or a slubby cotton tee, even when the cut is simple.
  3. Fit beats formality. A top that skims the body and sits right at the shoulder looks more professional than an expensive blouse that pulls or gapes.

What counts as business casual for women

Tops

Knit tops with a defined neckline: a V-neck, a boatneck, a jewel or scoop neck. Three-quarter sleeves are the easiest choice because they look finished on their own and still fit under a jacket. Sleeveless shells work under a blazer or cardigan. Blouses and button-down shirts are business casual too, but a smooth knit gives you the same polish without the ironing.

Bottoms

Tailored trousers in black, navy, grey or camel are the backbone. Chinos and crop trousers work in more relaxed offices. Skirts should land at the knee or below, in a pencil, A-line or midi shape. Dark jeans are only business casual where your office has said so.

Dresses

A sheath or a three-quarter sleeve knit dress in a solid color is one of the fastest business casual outfits there is. Add a jacket or cardigan for meetings. Keep hemlines at the knee or longer.

Layers

A blazer, a structured knit jacket or a longer cardigan. A layer is the quickest way to make any top more formal, which is why one jacket in navy or black does more for a work wardrobe than five new tops.

Shoes and accessories

Loafers, ballet flats, low block heels, pumps and plain ankle boots. Keep jewelry simple: one necklace or a pair of earrings, a watch, a structured bag.

What is not business casual

  • Athletic leggings, sweatshirts and hoodies
  • Distressed, light-wash or ripped denim
  • Graphic T-shirts and slogan tops
  • See-through fabrics, very low necklines and bare midriffs
  • Flip-flops and beach sandals
  • Very short skirts and dresses

Business casual vs smart casual vs business professional

Dress code What it looks like Where you wear it
Business professional A matched suit or a tailored dress with a jacket, closed-toe shoes. Law, finance, client presentations, formal interviews.
Business casual A polished top with a tailored trouser or skirt; a jacket when it matters. Most offices, most interviews, client lunches.
Smart casual One relaxed piece and one tailored piece; dark denim is fine. Dinners, events, creative or relaxed workplaces, Casual Friday.

Five business casual outfits for the week

Monday: the safe start. A navy Karen V-neck, black tailored trousers, loafers and a simple pendant. Nothing to think about, nothing that can go wrong.

Tuesday: the meeting day. A white Christina shell under a navy jacket, grey trousers and a low block heel. Take the jacket off after the meeting and the shell still looks finished.

Wednesday: the long day. A black Sandra tunic over slim black trousers with pointed flats. One long, unbroken line that looks sharp at 6pm as well as at 9am.

Thursday: a little color. A pearl Deborah V-neck with camel trousers, or swap in one of its brighter colors with navy trousers. One colored piece, everything else neutral.

Friday: the step down. A black Sabrina boatneck with dark jeans, if your office allows them, and ankle boots. The boatneck keeps the outfit polished when the trouser relaxes.

Business casual for an interview

For an interview, dress one step more formal than the job. If the office is business casual, wear a solid knit top or shell under a jacket, tailored trousers or a knee-length skirt, and a low heel or loafer. Navy, black and white are the safest colors because they let the conversation be about you, not the outfit. Make sure everything fits when you sit down as well as when you stand.

Making business casual easy

The women who look effortlessly put together at work usually own fewer pieces, not more. Five or six tops in neutrals, two trousers, one skirt or dress and one good jacket will cover a month of office days. Our Capsule Wardrobe Edit shows how those pieces fit together. If you travel for work, choose knits that come out of a suitcase without creases, so the outfit you packed is the outfit you wear.

Business casual questions, answered

What is business casual for women?

Business casual is a step down from a suit and a step up from weekend clothes. For women it usually means a polished top, a tailored trouser or knee-to-midi skirt, an optional jacket or cardigan, and a closed or clean shoe. No denim unless your office says so, nothing see-through, nothing athletic.

Can I wear jeans for business casual?

Only if your workplace allows it, and then only dark, clean, undistressed denim with a polished top and a jacket. If you are unsure, or it is your first week, wear a trouser instead.

Is a T-shirt business casual?

A plain cotton T-shirt usually is not. A knit top with a defined neckline, a smooth finish and a fitted shoulder, such as a V-neck or boatneck in a solid color, is. The difference is fabric and finish, not sleeve length.

What should a woman wear to a business casual interview?

Lean toward the dressier end: a solid knit top or shell under a jacket, tailored trousers or a knee-length skirt, and a low heel or loafer. Choose navy, black or white so nothing distracts from you.

What is the difference between business casual and smart casual?

Business casual is for the office and keeps one tailored piece in every outfit. Smart casual is for dinners, events and relaxed workplaces, and lets you swap the trouser for dark denim or the jacket for a wrap. Our smart casual guide covers that side in detail.
