Women's tops do more work than any other piece in the closet. Trousers, skirts and jeans repeat all week; the top is what people see across a desk, a table or a video call. Yet most of us own a drawer of tops we rarely wear, because the neckline is wrong, the sleeves are wrong, or the fabric came out of the wash looking tired. This guide walks through the main styles of tops for women, what each one is good for, which necklines and sleeves flatter whom, and how many you actually need.
The short answer: most women are well served by a small set of tops: two or three V-necks or boatnecks with 3/4 sleeves, one or two long sleeve tops, a sleeveless shell for layering, and a couple of short sleeve tops for warm days. Choose solid colors, a fit that skims rather than clings, and fabric that comes out of the wash ready to wear.

The main styles of women's tops
The V-neck top
The most flattering neckline for the widest range of women. A V draws the eye down and lengthens the neck, and it balances a fuller bust or a round face. A V-neck with 3/4 sleeves is the closest thing there is to a top that works everywhere: under a blazer at work, with jeans on Saturday, with a skirt for dinner.
The boatneck top
A wide, shallow neckline that runs almost straight from shoulder to shoulder. It frames the collarbones and broadens narrow shoulders, and it looks polished without any jewelry. If you have a long neck or sloping shoulders, a boatneck is worth trying.
The jewel neck top
A high, round neckline that sits at the base of the throat, the shape you see on classic shells and fine knits. It is the neatest neckline under a jacket or cardigan and the easiest one to wear a necklace with.
The turtleneck
Warm, sleek and quietly elegant. A fitted turtleneck in a smooth knit sits well under a coat or blazer and looks dressier than a sweater. It suits women with a longer neck best; if yours is shorter, choose a softer mock neck.
The shell and the tank
A shell is a sleeveless top with a clean neckline, made to wear under a jacket or cardigan. A tank has narrower straps and is more casual, or works as a base layer. Both earn their keep in summer and under layers the rest of the year.
The tunic
A longer top that falls to the hip or below, made to wear over leggings or slim trousers. It covers the hips and seat, which is why so many women reach for one on travel days and weekends. Our tunic guide covers lengths and fit.
Which sleeve length is right?
| Sleeve | Best for | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Sleeveless | Summer, layering under jackets and cardigans | Choose a cut-in or wider shoulder if you prefer more coverage |
| Short sleeve | Warm days, weekends, casual offices | A sleeve that ends mid-bicep is the most flattering on the upper arm |
| 3/4 sleeve | Almost everything, all year | Shows the wrist, stays out of the way, works under a jacket |
| Long sleeve | Cooler months, dressier settings | Looks the most polished; push sleeves up for a casual look |
If you could only buy one sleeve length, make it 3/4. It shows the narrowest part of the arm, it does not drag in the sink or on the keyboard, and it fits under every jacket.
How to choose a top that flatters
Fit matters more than style. A top should skim the body: no pulling across the bust or back, no gaping at the neckline, and no tenting at the hem. Three quick checks in the mirror:
- Shoulder seams sit at the edge of your shoulder, not halfway down the arm.
- Across the bust there are no horizontal pull lines when you reach forward.
- The hem ends at the hip bone for tucking or wearing out, or lower for tunics over leggings.
For body shape, a few rules of thumb help. A V-neck balances a fuller bust; a boatneck balances wider hips by broadening the shoulders; a relaxed fit is kinder to a soft middle than a tight one; and a longer top covers the hips without adding bulk. Our body shape guide goes into more detail.
Fabric: what makes a top look good all day
The fabric decides whether a top looks fresh at four in the afternoon. Thin cotton jersey stretches out and shows every lump; woven cotton and linen crease; silk needs care. A smooth, substantial knit with some stretch holds its shape, moves with you and does not need ironing. That is what we make: a microfiber and spandex knit, cut and sewn in the USA, that goes in the washing machine and comes out ready to wear.

Colors that work hardest
Start with neutrals: navy, black, white, pearl or natural. They go with every bottom you own, and a navy or black top looks finished under any jacket. Then add two or three colors that flatter your skin. Clear colors like red, cerulean blue and coral bring light to the face; softer colors like pink, celeste and periwinkle are gentler and easy to wear in daylight. A top is the easiest place to wear color, because it sits next to your face and does not need to match your shoes.
Women's tops over 40, 50 and 60
Style does not have an age limit, but a few things become more useful. A sleeve that covers the upper arm, a neckline that frames the face rather than plunging, and fabric that drapes instead of clinging all look modern and comfortable. Fit still matters more than size: a top that skims the body looks younger than an oversized one. And clear, saturated colors near the face tend to be more flattering than beige or grey.
How many tops do you need?
Fewer than you might think. Eight to ten tops in a mix of necklines and sleeves, mostly in colors that go together, will cover two weeks of dressing without repeating an outfit. A simple mix:
- 3 tops with 3/4 sleeves (V-neck, boatneck, relaxed V-neck)
- 2 long sleeve tops (a jewel neck and a turtleneck)
- 2 sleeveless shells or tanks for layering
- 2 short sleeve tops for warm days
- 1 tunic for leggings and travel days

Frequently asked questions
What are the most flattering tops for women?
For most women, a V-neck top with 3/4 sleeves in a smooth knit is the most flattering. The V lengthens the neck, the sleeve shows the narrowest part of the arm, and a fit that skims the body is more flattering than a tight or oversized one.
What tops are in style for women right now?
Clean, simple tops are the most current: solid colors, smooth fabrics, a neat neckline and a fit that skims the body. Boatnecks, jewel necks and fitted turtlenecks look polished, and a clear color like red or cerulean blue looks fresh.
What tops look good on women over 50?
Tops with a V-neck or boatneck, 3/4 or long sleeves, and fabric that drapes rather than clings. Clear, saturated colors near the face are flattering, and a top that skims the body looks more modern than an oversized one.
What kind of top should I wear with leggings?
A top long enough to cover the hips, such as a tunic that falls to mid-thigh. A longer 3/4 sleeve top also works. Avoid short or cropped tops with leggings unless you add a long cardigan.
How many tops should a woman have?
Eight to ten tops in a mix of necklines and sleeve lengths, mostly in colors that go together, is enough for two weeks of outfits without repeating. Add more only if you work in different dress codes or climates.
