The Smart Casual Edit
Smart casual outfits for women
Smart casual means one relaxed piece and one tailored piece, finished with a clean shoe. The relaxed piece is almost always the top — so that is where this page starts. Eight Made in USA JudyP tops from $84, in the colours with a complete size run in stock today. Styling is further down: five complete outfits you can copy, plus business casual and Casual Friday versions of the same wardrobe.

What smart casual means, in three rules
Smart casual trousers
Three trousers, and between them they cover everything above. The Krazy Larry straight leg is pull-on microfiber — no zip, nothing to press, and it comes in navy, black, taupe and ivory on its page. The Buki Easy Street chino is the sharper, more tailored option, full length or cropped.
The layer that makes it smart casual
Layering runs both ways. Christina and Stephanie are the JudyP pieces that go underneath — a sleeveless shell and a scoop tank, cut close enough that a jacket closes over them without bulk, and finished enough to work on their own when the jacket comes off. Over the top, three pieces do three different jobs: the Buki Neo-Tech jacket adds structure for a meeting, the kimono softens the same outfit for the weekend, and the scarf is the accent. The jacket comes in navy, black and charcoal on its page.

Five smart casual outfits you can copy
If you want the whole look rather than one piece, here is how we would put the tops above together. Tap any piece to shop it.
The client lunch
Polished enough for the meeting, easy enough for the patio after it.
A black boatneck over a tailored chino is the whole smart casual rule in two pieces: one soft, one structured. The scarf is the accent.
The office, any day
The one you can wear four days out of five and nobody notices it's the same formula.
White V-neck, navy trouser, navy jacket. Take the jacket off at your desk and it is still an outfit.
Dinner out
A dress that does the work, and a jacket for the restaurant air conditioning.
When the invitation says smart casual and you want a dress, this is the one. The black Neo-Tech jacket goes over it, or over any top above.
The weekend
Brunch, a gallery, errands in between. Relaxed without looking like you gave up.
A white tank under an open kimono, over a taupe trouser. Every piece in it is machine-washable.
Travel day
Airport to dinner in the same clothes, and they still look pressed when you land.
Long sleeve for the plane, a crop chino that clears a sneaker or a loafer, and a wrap that doubles as a blanket at 30,000 feet.
Business casual and Casual Friday outfits
These three dress codes share a wardrobe. What changes is how much structure you put on top.
A business casual outfit for the office
Sleeveless shell, navy trouser, navy jacket. The shell has no collar and no bulk, so the jacket closes cleanly over it. This is the version you keep the jacket on for.
A Casual Friday outfit
The same trouser story, softened: a relaxed white V-neck, a cropped chino and an open kimono instead of a jacket. Dark denim works here too, as long as the top is tailored.
Smart casual questions, answered
What is smart casual for women?
A polished-but-relaxed dress code between business casual and weekend wear. In practice it is a clean top, a tailored trouser, dark denim or a midi skirt, a structured layer, and a clean shoe such as a loafer, flat or low heel.
Can I wear jeans to a smart casual event?
Usually yes, if they are dark and not distressed, and you pair them with something tailored on top, like a jacket over one of the tops above. When in doubt, choose a trouser.
Is a tunic smart casual?
Yes, if it is a clean shape in a solid color. The Sandra tunic over a slim trouser reads smart casual. Add the Neo-Tech jacket to dress it up.
What is the difference between smart casual and business casual?
Business casual leans on structure: trousers, blazers, closed-toe shoes. Smart casual allows one relaxed piece, such as a knit top or dark denim, as long as something else in the outfit is tailored.
What is business casual for women?
A tailored trouser or skirt, a clean top that sits flat under a jacket, a structured layer and a closed shoe. Skip the collar and the bulk at the shoulder — a jewel neck, boatneck or sleeveless shell is the easiest thing to wear under a blazer. See the business casual outfit above.
What should I wear on Casual Friday?
The same trouser and top you wear the rest of the week, with the jacket swapped for a kimono, a wrap or nothing. Dark denim is usually fine on a Friday if the top is tailored. Fit is what keeps a Casual Friday outfit from reading like a weekend one.
