Christmas Outfits for Women: What to Wear on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Every Party

Christmas is not one occasion. It is a run of them: a party or two in December, Christmas Eve at church or around a dinner table, a slow Christmas morning in front of the tree, and a long Christmas Day of cooking, eating and visiting. Each wants something a little different, and most of us would rather not buy a separate outfit for every one. This guide covers what to wear for each part of Christmas, the colors that look best in holiday photos, and how to build several Christmas outfits for women from a handful of tops you already own or will wear all winter.

Shop Christmas tops: Our tops are made in the USA in a microfiber and spandex knit that stays smooth through a long day of cooking and visiting and never needs an iron. Sizes XS to XL.

The short answer: for most Christmas plans, wear one rich color on top, such as red, deep pink, navy or pearl, with dark trousers, jeans or leggings and a comfortable shoe. Dress it up for Christmas Eve with jewelry and a tailored trouser. Dress it down for Christmas Day with jeans or a tunic over leggings.

Christmas Eve: a little dressier

Christmas Eve is often the most dressed-up part of the holiday, especially if it includes a church service or a dinner out. Think of it as smart casual with a festive color. A long-sleeve jewel neck or turtleneck in red looks right in a candlelit church and at the dinner table afterwards. Navy and black are just as appropriate and a little quieter, and pearl or cream reads soft and special. Wear it with tailored trousers, a midi skirt with tights, or dark straight-leg jeans if your family keeps things relaxed.

Two details make the outfit feel finished. First, a neckline that frames your face: a V-neck, jewel neck or turtleneck all photograph better than a loose crew. Second, one piece of jewelry rather than several, such as a pair of earrings or a long pendant. Churches and restaurants can be warm once they fill up, so choose a coat you are happy to take off rather than a heavy sweater you are stuck in.

Christmas morning: comfortable, but ready for photos

Christmas morning photos last for years, and they are usually taken before anyone has thought about clothes. The fix is simple: lay out a soft top in a festive color the night before, with leggings or relaxed trousers. It feels like loungewear, but it looks like you got dressed. Skip anything with a slogan if you want the photos to age well, and choose a top that does not crease when you sit on the floor among the wrapping paper.

Christmas Day: the long day

Christmas Day asks the most of an outfit. You might cook, drive to family, sit at a table for two hours, chase grandchildren and fall asleep on the sofa, all in the same clothes. Comfort comes first, but most of us still want to look like we made an effort.

The easiest answer is a tunic over leggings. A tunic long enough to cover your seat, with a little ease through the body, gives you the comfort of leggings and still looks polished at the table. In red it is festive; in black or pearl it goes with any family's idea of dressed up. Our Tunic Edit shows the tunics in the colors we have in stock today, and our guide to tunic length and fit explains what to look for.

The second answer is a three-quarter sleeve top with dark jeans. A three-quarter sleeve stays out of the way when you are cooking or washing up and never needs pushing up. Choose a knit that comes out of the dryer smooth, so the top you wear to Christmas dinner is ready again for leftovers the next day.

Hosting Christmas dinner

If dinner is at your house, you need an outfit that can survive the kitchen and still look right when everyone sits down. Choose a sleeve that stays put, such as a fitted three-quarter sleeve or a long sleeve that is close through the forearm. Avoid wide or flowing sleeves near a stove. Pick a top you can put in the washing machine, because something will get spilled. Dark bottoms hide the rest. Keep a second top on a hanger in your bedroom if you want to change after the cooking is done; it takes thirty seconds and makes you feel like a guest at your own table.

Christmas parties

For an office party, a neighborhood open house or an evening with friends, read the invitation. An evening party at a restaurant or someone's home with candles and a bar leans dressy: a dark dress, or a rich-color top with satin or wide-leg trousers. An afternoon or family party leans relaxed: a festive top with dark jeans. Our holiday party outfit guide goes through each kind of party, and our guide to going out tops covers the tops that look good after dark.

The best Christmas colors

Red is the classic. It looks festive next to a tree and in candlelight. If a whole red outfit feels like too much, wear red only on top and keep everything else dark. Deep pink, such as our Bougainvillea, is a fresher take that still reads festive. Navy and black are the safest bases; add color with a scarf or jewelry. Pearl and cream look soft and special, especially on Christmas Eve. Rich blue is a good choice if you want to stand out without wearing red. Traveling for Christmas

If you are flying or driving to family, pack Christmas outfits that share one color base so every top works with every bottom. Two pairs of trousers or jeans, leggings, three or four tops and one layer cover a long weekend. Knits that come out of a suitcase smooth save you from hunting for an iron in someone else's house. Our travel outfits guide and airport outfit ideas cover the trip itself.

Christmas outfits for women over 50

The most flattering Christmas outfits for women over 50 put color near the face and keep the rest simple. A V-neck or jewel neck in red, deep pink or pearl lifts your complexion in photos far more than sequins do. A three-quarter or long sleeve is warmer and more comfortable for most of us than sleeveless. A tunic over leggings, or a top with a little ease through the middle, lets you enjoy the meal. And a comfortable shoe matters more on Christmas Day than any other day of the year.

Christmas outfit questions, answered

What should a woman wear on Christmas Day?

Something comfortable enough to sit, cook and play in for hours, but dressed enough for photos: a long-sleeve or three-quarter sleeve top in a rich color with dark jeans, trousers or leggings, plus a flat or low boot. A tunic over leggings is one of the easiest Christmas Day outfits there is.

What do you wear to a Christmas Eve service or dinner?

Lean a little dressier than Christmas Day: a jewel neck, turtleneck or V-neck in red, navy, black or pearl with tailored trousers or a skirt and a warm coat. Add one piece of jewelry and you are ready for church and dinner afterwards.

What colors should I wear for Christmas?

Red is the classic, but deep pink, navy, black, pearl, cream and rich blue all look festive in photos and next to a tree. If you want to wear red but it feels like a lot, keep it on top and wear everything else dark.

What is a good casual Christmas outfit?

A soft knit top in a holiday color, dark jeans or leggings, and comfortable boots or flats. It looks put together at the table and is easy to sit on the floor in when the gifts come out.

What should women over 50 wear for Christmas?

A three-quarter or long-sleeve top with a V-neck, jewel neck or turtleneck in a color that warms your face, worn with dark trousers or a tunic over leggings. Color near the face does more than sparkle or heavy embellishment.

What should I wear to a Christmas party?

Read the invitation. An evening party leans dressy, so wear a dark dress or a rich-color top with dressy trousers. A daytime or at-home party leans relaxed, so a festive top with dark jeans is right. Our holiday party outfit guide covers each kind of party.
