Holiday party season asks a lot of one wardrobe: the office party at 5, a neighbor's open house on Saturday afternoon, dinner with friends, a family gathering and, at the end of it all, New Year's Eve. The good news is that you don't need a different outfit for each. A few pieces in rich colors, a black base and the right layer cover almost every invitation. This guide covers what to wear to each kind of holiday party, the colors that work best, how to stay warm without hiding the outfit and how to dress the same top up or down.
Shop holiday party tops: Our tops are made in the USA in a microfiber and spandex knit that holds its shape through a long evening and never needs an iron. Sizes XS to XL.

Start with the invitation
Most holiday invitations don't name a dress code, so read the clues: the time, the place and who is hosting. An evening party at a restaurant or hotel leans dressy. An afternoon open house at someone's home leans relaxed. A party your employer is throwing sits in between, and always errs toward polished. When in doubt, choose one standout piece, keep everything else simple and dark, and you will look right whichever way the room goes.
| Kind of party | What to wear | Shoes |
|---|---|---|
| Office holiday party | A strong-color top with black trousers or a dark skirt; a blazer if it starts straight after work | Low block heels, loafers or ankle boots |
| Cocktail or evening party | A dark dress, or a dressier top with satin or wide-leg trousers | Heeled sandals, pumps or heeled boots |
| Dinner with friends | A long-sleeve jewel neck or V-neck in a rich color with dark jeans or trousers | Ankle boots or loafers |
| Open house or family gathering | A tunic over leggings, or a soft V-neck with trousers you can sit on the floor in | Flats or low boots |
| New Year's Eve | Black from head to toe with one bright or shiny accent | Whatever you can stand in until midnight |
The office holiday party
Treat it as work with better lighting. Your colleagues and manager will be there, so the rule is festive, not revealing. A deep pink, red or jewel-tone top with black trousers is the easiest answer: it looks like you made an effort and still belongs in the building. If the party starts at 5 and you are coming from your desk, wear the same top all day under a blazer, then take the blazer off, add earrings and change into a heel. Skip anything very short, very low cut or very sheer.

Cocktail and evening parties
This is where a little black dress earns its keep. A sleeveless sheath with a jacket or wrap over it, and a heeled shoe, works for almost any evening party. If you would rather not wear a dress, a sleeveless shell or a fitted black tank with wide-leg or satin trousers is just as dressy and easier to move in. Let one thing shine: earrings, a metallic shoe or a velvet jacket. More than one and the outfit starts competing with itself.

Dinner with friends and casual parties
For a dinner out or a party at a friend's home, dark jeans are fine as long as the top does the dressing up. A long-sleeve jewel neck or a V-neck in a rich color, ankle boots and a pair of statement earrings is the outfit. At a family gathering, where you may be cooking, sitting on the floor with children or holding a plate on your lap all afternoon, comfort matters more: a long tunic over leggings looks pulled together and moves with you.

Holiday party colors
Red is the classic for a reason: it is festive without trying, and a true red flatters most skin tones. Deep pinks such as bougainvillea, jewel tones like cobalt and emerald, and warm corals all look rich in evening light. Black is always right and is the easiest base for one bright piece. If you prefer neutrals, choose a warm one like pearl or cream over stark white, and bring the sparkle in through jewelry or shoes.
A useful rule for any party: one color, everything else dark. A bright top with black trousers and black shoes looks far more deliberate than two or three colors competing. Our guide to the best clothing colors for women over 60 goes deeper on which shades flatter which skin tones.
Staying warm without hiding the outfit
December parties mean coats, cold venues and drafty doorways. Choose a top with sleeves if you know the room will be cool, or bring a layer that is part of the look: a velvet blazer, a long cardigan or a wrap in a contrasting color. Sheer black tights under a dress or skirt are warmer and dressier than bare legs. Leave the puffer coat at the door and let the layer you keep on be the one people see.
One top, three parties
A single strong-color top can cover the whole season. Wear it with tailored trousers and a blazer to the office party. Swap to satin trousers or a midi skirt and heels for an evening party. Put it with dark jeans and ankle boots for dinner with friends. Because our tops are made in a wrinkle-free knit, the same one comes out of an overnight bag ready to wear if the party is out of town.
Holiday party outfits for women over 50
The best holiday outfits at any age are the ones you can forget about once you arrive. Three-quarter or long sleeves, a V-neck or jewel neck that frames the face, and a fit that skims rather than clings give coverage and still look dressed up. Color near the face does more than embellishment: a rich pink, red or coral top brightens skin in the warm, low light of most parties, and it photographs well.

Red, deep pink, jewel tones such as cobalt and emerald, warm coral and black. If you prefer neutrals, choose pearl or cream and add sparkle through jewelry or shoes.
