A good vacation wardrobe lets you stop thinking about clothes. You want outfits that work from the pool to a nice dinner, that survive a suitcase, and that still look like you rather than a costume. This guide covers vacation outfits for women for the most common trips: the beach, a cruise, a resort, a city break and a winter escape to the sun, plus a packing list that fits in a carry-on.
The short answer: pick one color palette, pack five or six light tops (sleeveless, short sleeve and one or two 3/4 or long sleeve), two or three bottoms, one knit dress, one layer for planes and evenings, a swimsuit and cover-up, and two pairs of comfortable shoes. Everything should mix, wash in a sink and come out of the bag smooth.
Shop vacation tops: Our tops are made in the USA in a microfiber and spandex knit that machine washes, packs flat and does not need ironing. Sizes XS to XL.

Five rules for vacation outfits
- Build around one palette. Two neutrals (white and navy, or black and natural) plus one or two colors you love. Every top then works with every bottom, and you pack fewer pieces.
- Every top should work twice. Once casual, with shorts or a denim skirt, and once dressed up, with trousers or a skirt and jewelry. If a top only works one way, leave it home.
- Choose fabric that travels. Smooth knits and blends come out of a bag looking neat and dry overnight. Heavy cotton and linen look rumpled after an hour in a suitcase.
- Plan for air conditioning. Restaurants, planes and cruise ship dining rooms are cold. One 3/4 or long sleeve top, or a light cardigan, saves the evening.
- Two pairs of shoes, maybe three. One you can walk all day in, one sandal that works for dinner. Add a water shoe or sneaker only if the trip needs it.
Vacation outfits by type of trip
| Trip | Daytime | Evening | Pack extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach | Tank or sleeveless shell, shorts, cover-up, sandals | Short sleeve top, white trousers or a midi skirt | Hat, swim cover-up, a second swimsuit |
| Cruise | Sleeveless top, cropped trousers, sneakers for excursions | Knit dress or a dressy top and trousers | A layer for the dining room, one dressier outfit |
| Resort / all-inclusive | Swim, cover-up, tank and shorts | A bright top with white trousers, or a knit dress | Flat sandals that work at dinner |
| City break | 3/4 sleeve top, slim trousers or dark jeans, walking shoes | The same top with a skirt or a scarf | A light jacket, a crossbody bag |
| Winter sun escape | Warm-weather outfits for there | Same as beach or resort | A coat and layers for the airport at home |
Beach vacation outfits
The beach is the easiest trip to over-pack for. You need less than you think: two swimsuits, one cover-up, three or four tops and two bottoms. A white or pale tank with shorts covers lunch and the walk back to the room. For dinner, swap the shorts for white trousers or a midi skirt and the tank for a short sleeve top in a bright color. A sleeveless shell with a boatneck looks more finished than a tank and still keeps you cool.
Cruise outfits
Cruises have more dress codes than most trips: casual days, excursion days and at least one dressier night. Plan the evenings first, because that is where most women run short. A knit dress and a dressy top with black trousers cover two or three nights between them. Ship dining rooms are cool, so bring a 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve top rather than relying on sleeveless. For excursions, a tank, cropped trousers and sneakers you can climb in.
Resort and all-inclusive outfits
Resorts swing between swimsuit-and-cover-up days and restaurants that ask for “resort casual”, which usually means no swimwear, no flip-flops and, for men, collared shirts. For women, resort casual is a nice top with trousers, a skirt or a simple dress. A bright color (coral, cerulean, bougainvillea) with white trousers is the classic resort dinner outfit for a reason: it looks good in photos and it takes no thought.
City break outfits
City vacations are about walking. Choose a 3/4 sleeve top, slim trousers or dark jeans and the most comfortable smart shoes you own. A black or navy boatneck works for a museum in the morning and a restaurant at night, and a scarf changes the look without adding weight. If the city is cooler than home, pack layers rather than one heavy sweater. For more city and transit outfits, see our travel outfits for women.
Winter sun escape
Escaping winter for a week of sun means packing for two climates. Wear your heaviest layers on the plane (a long sleeve top, a cardigan, a coat you can leave in the car or carry), and pack only warm-weather clothes in the case. Our guide to airport outfits for women covers what to wear on the travel day itself.
A vacation capsule that fits in a carry-on
This list covers a week in a warm place with a mix of casual days and nicer dinners:
- 2 sleeveless tops (one shell, one tank) in white and a color
- 2 short sleeve tops, one neutral and one bright
- 1 or 2 3/4 sleeve or long sleeve tops for planes and cool evenings
- 1 pair of white or light trousers and 1 pair of shorts or a denim skirt
- 1 midi skirt or 1 pair of dark trousers
- 1 knit dress
- 1 light cardigan or wrap
- 2 swimsuits and 1 cover-up
- Walking sandals or sneakers, and 1 dressier sandal
That is roughly 20 outfits from a single bag. For the full checklist, including toiletries, documents and tech, see travel essentials for women.

Vacation colors that work together
Bright colors look better on vacation than they do at home, so this is the trip for coral, cerulean, bougainvillea and red. The trick is to pair each bright top with a neutral bottom (white, navy, black or natural) so you can mix freely. A good starter set: two neutral tops, two bright tops, one bottom in white and one in navy or black. Every top goes with every bottom, which gives you eight outfits from six pieces.
Vacation outfits for women over 50
The same rules apply at every age; what changes is comfort. Choose tops with a little sleeve if you prefer to cover the upper arm (a 3/4 sleeve V-neck or a short sleeve jewel neck), trousers or cropped pants over very short shorts, and a knit dress that skims rather than clings. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else on the list. Bright color near the face is flattering at every age, and on vacation it does the work that jewelry does at home.
Keeping vacation clothes fresh
Hot days mean more washing. Pack clothes that rinse in a sink and dry overnight, a small bottle of travel detergent and a few hangers. Roll knits rather than folding them, keep a laundry bag for worn clothes, and hang tomorrow's outfit when you unpack. Our guide to quick dry clothes for women covers which fabrics dry fastest.
Vacation outfit questions, answered
What should I wear on vacation as a woman?
Pack light, mix-and-match pieces in one color palette: sleeveless and short sleeve tops for the day, one or two 3/4 sleeve tops for planes and evenings, shorts or a skirt, light trousers, one knit dress, a light layer, swimwear and two pairs of comfortable shoes.
How many outfits should I pack for a 7-day vacation?
About ten to twelve pieces of clothing, not seven complete outfits. Five or six tops, two or three bottoms and one dress that all mix give you more than enough combinations for a week, especially if you can rinse a top in the sink.
What is resort casual for women?
Resort casual means relaxed but polished: a nice top with trousers, a skirt or a simple dress, and sandals rather than flip-flops. No swimwear or cover-ups at dinner. A bright knit top with white trousers is a classic resort casual outfit.
What should I wear on a cruise for dinner?
Most cruise dinners are smart casual: a knit dress, or a dressy top with trousers or a skirt. Bring a layer, because ship dining rooms are cool, and check your cruise line for any formal nights.
What colors are best for vacation clothes?
Pair one or two bright colors you love, such as coral, cerulean or red, with two neutrals like white and navy. Every top then goes with every bottom, and you pack fewer pieces.
How do I keep vacation clothes from wrinkling?
Choose smooth knits and blends instead of linen and heavy cotton, roll clothes rather than folding them, and hang them as soon as you arrive. A knit that comes out of the bag smooth saves you looking for an iron.
