The V-neck is the neckline women come back to most after 50, and for good reason. It draws the eye up and down instead of across, lengthens the neck, and gives a necklace somewhere to sit. But not every V-neck flatters. Too deep and it feels exposed; too clingy and it shows every line; too stiff and it gapes. This guide covers how deep a V should be, which fit to choose, and how to wear one all week.
V-neck tops for women over 50, in one line: choose a moderate V that sits above the bust line, in an opaque knit that skims rather than clings, with a sleeve that suits your arms. Then let the neckline do the work.
How deep should a V-neck be?
The most wearable V ends a few inches below the collarbone, above the bust line. That depth lengthens the neck without asking you to think about what shows when you lean forward. Two quick checks in the mirror: lean forward as if you were picking something up, and lift your arms. If you would want to adjust the top, the V is too deep for everyday wear.
A moderate V is also the one that works at the office. It reads as polished under a blazer or cardigan, and it is modest enough for most workplaces.
Fitted, relaxed or ruched: which V-neck is yours
| Fit | What it does | Ours |
|---|---|---|
| Fitted | Sits close without clinging. Tucks in neatly and layers under jackets. | Deborah |
| Relaxed | Skims the waist and hips. Made to wear untucked. | Karen |
| Ruched | Gathered sides drape over the midsection and add shape. | Rachel |
| Sleeveless | A V-neck tank for warm days and for layering under cardigans. | Tracey |
If you want one V-neck, start fitted. If you prefer tops that do not touch the midsection, choose relaxed or ruched.

Choosing a sleeve
3/4 sleeve is the most useful length after 50. It covers the upper arm, looks finished on its own, and still fits under a jacket. It also pushes up easily on a warm afternoon. Sleeveless works best as a layer under a cardigan or open shirt, or on its own in the heat.
How to wear a V-neck all week
At work. A fitted V-neck tucked into tailored trousers under a blazer is the simplest office outfit there is. Keep jewelry to one pendant that sits inside the V. Our business casual guide has five more outfits built on the same idea.
On weekends. A relaxed V-neck worn loose over dark jeans or slim trousers, with a longer necklace and flats or clean sneakers.
For dinner. Swap to a darker or richer colour, add earrings, and wear it with a skirt or wide-leg trousers.
For travel. A 3/4 sleeve V-neck covers your arms on a cold plane and looks finished when you land. A knit that resists wrinkles comes out of the suitcase ready to wear. See our travel outfits for women for full packing lists.
V-neck or boatneck?
A V-neck opens the neckline and lengthens; a boatneck runs wide and covers more, and looks polished with no jewelry at all. Many women keep one of each. Our guide to choosing between a V-neck and a boatneck after 50 goes into which suits which shoulders.
What to look for in the fabric
- Opaque. Hold it up to the light. A good knit does not show what is underneath, even in white.
- Skims, does not cling. A smooth knit with some weight drapes over the body rather than outlining it.
- Holds the V. The neckline should keep its shape after washing instead of stretching into a scoop.
- Easy care. Machine washable and no ironing, so you will actually wear it.
Every JudyP V-neck is made in the USA from a soft microfiber and spandex knit that resists wrinkles, with UPF 50 as rated by our fabric supplier, in sizes XS to XL.
V-neck questions, answered
Are V-neck tops flattering for women over 50?
Yes. A V-neck draws the eye vertically, which lengthens the neck and torso. A moderate V that sits above the bust line is the most flattering and the easiest to wear.
How deep should a V-neck be for work?
A few inches below the collarbone and above the bust line. If you would want to adjust it when you lean forward, it is too deep for the office.
Should I choose a fitted or relaxed V-neck?
Fitted if you like to tuck in or layer under jackets; relaxed or ruched if you prefer a top that does not touch the midsection.
What sizes do JudyP V-neck tops come in?
Most run XS to XL. The Karen relaxed fit runs S to XL. Each style page shows the sizes in stock for each colour.
